What is the Sea Scout Base?
The Base is the product of the combined efforts of the member groups over many years. These groups sought to build a permanent shared facility where they could run their water activities and store their training equipment. With humble beginnings as a shed on the edge of the vlei, the base has grown in membership over the years and has grown in size. The facility boasts a hall and fully equipped catering kitchen, overnight accommodation, ablution facilities with hot water and private showers as well as several boatsheds and training facilities. The Sea Scout groups that are members appoint an executive committee from amongst their parent committees at the AGM and the executive in conjunction with the uniformed Scouters carry out the daily business of the Base.

Where is the Sea Scout Base?
The Base is situated on the banks of Sandvlei on the opposite side to Marina da Gama. It is a stones throw from Lakeside station and is an easy walk from Muizenberg beach. Its location lends itself to being a dynamic venue for youth activities as well as being in the midst of breathtaking scenery and nature.

What happens there?
From training to racing, camping to events – it all happens at the Base. The primary activity at the Base is Sailing. Various provincial courses are held at the Base to provide the necessary skills to the Scouts so that they can enjoy sailing as a sport. These courses are open to all Scouts from the province and are generally oversubscribed. Many Scout patrols make use of the camp site “the point”, and many Cub packs use the hall, kitchen and accommodation for their camping requirements. The Base plays host to a wide variety of visitors during the year and often sees foreign visitors needing a place to stay while in Cape Town. The Base has also become involved in an initiative to bring schools to the premises for educational camps that focus on environmental issues related to water. Some 500 learners will pass through the facility every year.
